Vintage Apron Purse Craft Project

How to Turn a Vintage Apron into a Drawstring Purse

Ann Siper
Love the look of vintage purses and want to create a unique one? Well break out one of your vintage aprons to create this fun and super easy drawstring purse!

So, I love vintage crafts and I love taking vintage items, like aprons, and turning them into something new and fun! The great thing about this vintage craft project is that any sized apron will do. I find awesome vintage children's aprons as well as vintage women's aprons all the time at my local flea market. They come in all shapes, sizes, and colors!

The best shape for this vintage craft project is the kind of vintage apron that ties at the waste and simply hangs down. The full body aprons will not work without some cutting.

To Turn a Vintage Apron Into a Drawstring Purse You Will Need:

So, the first step is to launder your vintage apron and hang it out to dry.

Now, once the apron is dry you want to lay is face down on a flat work surface.

Cut off the strings that tie is around your waste. You only ant to cut them off where they stop being attached to the vintage apron; the actual strings that stick out on either side.

Now, take the band of the vintage apron and fold it down about one inch. This should be folding towards the back of the apron.

Now, pin this down to create a long thin pocket. Use your sewing chine to sew this line. You want to create a long them tunnel with openings at either end of the vintage apron.

Now, take the apron and fold it in half, with the pattern or front side in. Lien up the sides and the bottom. Pin them in place.

Now, Sew the sides together as well as the bottom. DO NOT SEW OVER THE TUNNEL YOU MADE for the drawstrings. Stop right before this.

You have now made the bag part of your vintage drawstring purse.

So, turn this inside out.

Ok, now, you have a few options for the string on the vintage drawstring purse. If your apron strings you cut off were long enough you can sew the two rough ends where you cut together to make one long string and use this. If this is not long enough your can use a ribbon.

So, slide your ribbon or vintage apron strings through the small tunnel you made. You want to have equal parts stick out each hole.

Now, pull your strings tight to shut the vintage purse and tie then in a bow! You are finished!

Tips:

Use fusible interfacing to line the vintage apron purse if it is just too flimsy. Some vintage aprons can be rather thin. Cut the fusible interfacing out to the same size and shape as your apron. Iron it onto the vintage fabric and sew as usual.

You can also use the strings of the apron to create a handle. Sew the finished ends together. Now, pin the rough ends into the top edge of the apron, right below the drawstring tunnel. When you sew the sides and bottom together this will sew your handle in place. Be sure to have the handle hanging in to the pattern side so when you turn it inside out the handle is on the outside.
