Vintage Book Drawer Pulls

Ann Siper
These vintage book drawer pulls are a great way to make vintage looking kitchen cabinet drawer pulls and hardware out of old and damage books that still have a great spine! I love to decorate with vintage books. The colors are so wonderful.

The colors of vintage books will also hide a ton of dirt if your kitchen cabinet hardware gets a lot of use.

So, check out those yard sale's hunt through the library book sales, and get all those damaged vintage hardcover books ready! By the way, you could even use not so old hardcover books for this fun craft project!

To Make Vintage Book Drawer Pulls and Hardware You Will Need:

Old hardcover books (minus the cover)

Hand saw or jug saw

Clear epoxy glue

Clear acrylic spray paint

Glue

Power drill

Wood screws

So, to get started you are going to have to cut those vintage books. This is why I recommend using damage books that might be missing pages, loose covers, or worse. You can repair these problems as you make the vintage kitchen hardware.

Now, depending on how tall your book is you will need to adjust your cuts. Here is the basic idea though.

Lay the book flat on the counter with the binder or spine facing you. This is how the vintage book will be as a kitchen cabinet drawer pull.

Now, measure how wide your existing kitchen cabinet holes are. Now, mark this on the book, near the edge of the book that opens.

Now, you want to leave the top, binder, and bottom of the book. You will cutting away the tall side that opens.

So, cut the vintage book vertically about four inches in from the spine.

Now, on the cut edge you want to cut out a middle square or rectangle to make a handle. Simple cut out a square that is at least one inch in from the top and bottom and spine of the book.

Now you are left with a shape just like a traditional kitchen cabinet handle.

So, now break out the glue and start gluing all the pages together. Glue the covers together as well. Keep the shape; just glue the hole thing shut.

Now, on the outside of the book you can paint the surface with a clear acrylic spray paint.

Apply at least 3 coats of spray paint. You can also paint on an oil based polyurethane.

Now, let this dry completely.

Once your vintage book kitchen cabinet handle has dried you are ready to install it.

So, line your vintage kitchen cabinet handle up over the existing holes in the cabinet. Mark though the holes and mark wheel the holes needs to be on the back of the vintage book to turn it into a kitchen cabinet handle.

Now, pre drill both holes into the back of the book about 2 inches in.

Now, place your vintage kitchen hardware in place and screw them into place form inside the kitchen drawer.

Tip: Do not pre drill a hole that is larger than your screw. You want to actually go a little smaller. This will give the screw something to grip onto!
