While I've never revolted against the name-brand companies that make overpriced jeans or sneakers, some locals have. Back in the 90s, right on the corner of Haight and Ashbury streets, protesters demonstrated against the Gap store. The desire for more private designers and small business owners to have their piece of the pie brought about change.

Today, many stores in this area are that; a mom and pop type with an old hippie twist. Most of the clothes are out of the decade that brought rock and revolution into the West. But, dressing with flare isn't a new idea, it's just a natural result of recycling and reusing. Stores like Goodwill and Buffalo Exchange are also in the mix there. Whether it's corporately owned or newly opened by some college dropout hoping to stay in town, it's all just fashion, and it's fun.
