Vintage Choker Craft Project

This vintage choker craft project makes a fun gift for anyone who loves all things retro, vintage, and shabby chic. You can take any vintage cameo from the flea market and turn it into a fun choker or long choker using simple materials from the craft store.

To Make a Vintage Choker or Cameo Necklace You Will Need:

1 Cameo

Velvet Thread

Snaps or Necklace Clasps

Thread

Needle

Scissors

To get started you will want to measure the circumference of your neck. Add 2 inches to this and cut your velvet ribbon to this length.

Tip: You can also make this a vintage looking necklace if you do not like the look of a vintage choker or the tighter feel of a choker.

Once the ribbon is cut you will need to apply some No Fray to the edges. The other option is to fold the edges over by 1/8 inch and sew this down. You need to do one of these to keep the ends from fraying and causing the ribbon to unravel.

Now, on each end you need to dew on your snaps. The male end of the snap needs to be on the back of the ribbon and the female end of the ribbon needs to be on the front.

Tip: Use a snap on snap. Sounds funny, but basically this is a snap this has 4 pieces, 2 for the male and 2 for the female. You simply snap the two pieces together on the end of the ribbon in place of sewing.

Slip the vintage cameo onto the ribbon and you are finished!

Here are some more tips for customizing this easy craft, which will make perfect to sell on websites like Etsy and your own personal website.

Lay the ribbon out flat on your table. You can use gold or silver antique colored fabric paint to stencil on designs along the ribbon. You can also write sweet messages that personalize the necklace.

Another fun idea is to emboss the velvet. You can find easy velvety embossing instructions online and create one of a kind ribbons perfect for a shabby chic necklace craft.

Finally, if you have access to necklace clasps, then these can also simply be sewn onto to the end so f the velvet ribbons. To do this I recommend folding the ribbon in half to make it more narrow on the needs. This will lead to the much smaller clasps and make them look a little less awkward.
