Vintage Christmas Decorations

The New Trend in Christmas Decorations

Holly Day
In spite of the use and abuse of ultra modern engineering and the rushing hullabaloo of the twenty-first century, people often seem to become nostalgic when it comes to home decorating for Christmas. Norman Rockwell's creations - marvelous pictures of Victorian villages under the snow, children eagerly waiting for the arrival of the Great Saint Nicholas while carolers walking around the village singing Christmas carols. Thinking to families decorating a beautiful Christmas tree and drinking the traditional winter beverage makes our hearts feel merry. These "old world" visions are the reasons why a lot of us desire vintage Christmas ornaments for decorating our homes. However, truly old vintage ornaments can be difficult, and expensive, to acquire.

Not so long ago the nostalgic desire for items from the past has caused a boom in the artistic creation of vintage hand-crafted Christmas ornaments in the last 10-15 years. A lot of online and regular retail outlets specializing in vintage items now offer hand-crafted classic Christmas ornaments made of silver or tin with that old days flavor. Hand-blown, gorgeous glass ornaments to dazzle the eye, vintage twenties looking tin ornaments engraved with the early renditions of jolly old Saint Nick, and softly shining bubble lights in an array of beautiful colors.

Maybe a gold and silver foil angel shimmering in the soft lights of the pine scented Christmas tree whose top is adorn with an old fashioned way tin star painted with a view right out of a Norman Rockwell painting. A homemade garland of popcorn strung around the tree along with crystal 'icicles' shining by the light of burning candles. These tiny "gift" looking ornaments and other gold, silver, glass, tin, cotton or even carboard decorations that look like fruits, pickels, birds... There was a time when people would put tiny candles in holders only made for such a purpose all over the tree. This use was highly risky as it caused many fires. Nowadays, it is possible to have the same kind of old world candles without the open flame.

Current trends are moving towards these old wreaths that are made of foil and tin and with pearls or angels attached as well as traditional wreath made out of pine and holly with gold ornaments and dried flowers. Modern Christmas garlands are not as beautiful as vintage garlands made out of small pine limbs tied with natural bond like hemp and decorated with colored berries and pine cones.

For many of us, Christmas time is a period of the year to relax and think of an old time when things weren't so harried. Nostalgia creeps in and makes us wistful for a rather romanticized period when winter was still a time of rest for all creatures - including all of us rushed and harried humans. Decorating with the wonderful and beautiful vintage ornaments of by-gone days help us to have that soft and warm feeling of nostalgia we long for. So do not wait to raise Norman Rockwell's imaginary and first of all, have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
