The first thing you need to start making your Vintage Fabric Paper Dolls is tons of fabric of course. By tons I really mean some variety. You need some vintage fabric for the skin of course. Any color you wan it fine. I personally think it is very fun and folk artsy to make these paper dolls with red, blue, yellow, or purple vintage fabric for the skin. This is a very creative fabric with a whimsical touch; so do not feel stuck looking for the perfect fabric for the skin color.
You will also need different colored fabrics for the hair, clothes, and shoes.... So, break out that scarp paper you though your had no use for, yes those tiny little scraps of retro fabric you hoard just because the colors are so great!
Now, take your skin color fabric and iron it to some heavy or super sturdy fusible interfacing.
Trace out the shape of the paper doll on some paper. You can trace existing paper dolls or take some inspiration from your little girl's Barbie. You only want the outline of the whole body.
Cut this out and trace it onto your fuse body fabric.
Now, cut out the body.
Now, you need to iron on the shoe, hair, dress, and purse fabric to the fusible interfacing. Repeat the drawing on paper to make your pattern and then tracing and cutting out.
Now, take the accessories and details and use some fabric glue to glue them into place on the paper doll.
Once the glue dries you can use fabric paint to add eyes, nose, and mouth.
Fabric paint is also perfect for adding small details like buttons, stitches, and more to the Vintage Fabric Paper Dolls.
Now, let the fabric paint dry.
These Vintage Fabric Paper Dolls will only cost about $1 a pop if you are using scrap fabrics! You can make these Vintage Fabric Paper Dolls in all shapes and sizes and your girl's will love them!
These Vintage Fabric Paper Dolls would also make a great craft for a group of girls to make at a birthday party!
