Vintage Fabric Placemat

This simple and elegant Vintage Fabric dinner placemat is a fun vintage craft project that both kids and adults can do. I always come across great remnants of vintage fabric online and at the local flea market. While there is not always enough to make many crafts, your can easily cut the vintage fabric into strips to make this simple vintage placemat!

All you need is some of your favorite Vintage Fabric and a little time!

The finished product is so nice that this simple Vintage Fabric placemat would really make a great hostess gift for anyone who loves to entertain!

To make these simple Vintage Fabric placemats you will need:

Vintage Fabric

Scissors or pinking sheers

No Fray

Ruler or tape measure

No Sew or Sewing Machine

Masking Tape

The first step to making this simple Vintage Fabric placemat is to cut your Vintage Fabric. I like to use pinking sheers to cut strips of vintage fabric out that are about 2 inches wide and about 20 inches long.

You can make your Vintage Fabric placemat any size that you want, but I like to make mine at least 12 inches deep and 18 inches wide. This way you can see some of the hard work you put into the craft even when you plate is sitting on it.

Now, once you have your strips of vintage fabric cut you need to apply some no fray product to the cut edges. This will hold the cute design your pinking sheers cut in your vintage fabric.

By the way, my Vintage Fabric strips are 2 inches wide. This is really the best size for this craft project, but you can always experiment with any size you want!

Now, if you are using my measurements, then cut 8 pieces of Vintage Fabric to 14 inches long. Now, cut 6 pieces of ribbon to 20 inches long.

Now, I like to go ahead and lay out the horizontal piece on a flat work surface I do not mind tapering to. Lay all of your 6 pieces that are 20 inches long out like a rectangle. They should all match up on the ends and just touch each other.

Now, tape the ends of the Vintage Fabric strips down on each side. Only tape in one-inch form the ends. If you go any farther than you will be taping on the surface of your Vintage Fabric placemat.

Now, start working your vertical strips of Vintage Fabric in like you are weaving a basket.

Basically, start at the; left bottom corner, right inside of the masking tape.

Tear off a small piece of tape. Take on of your 14-inch pieces of Vintage Fabric and weave it in and out while you keep it all the way to the left.

Se that small piece of tape to tape the end down on the bottom left. When you get to the top left, then tear off another piece of tape are firmly attach that end of the Vintage Fabric strip to the table as well. You should end up with one inch of spare Vintage Fabric strip sticking out each end of the placemat.

Now, repeat this step with another piece of 14 inch Vintage Fabric. Have it butt up to this first piece you wove vertically. Weave it the opposite of the first piece. So, if you started weaving over then under the first time, then this time you should go under than over.

Now, tape the ends down again.

Repeat this working until you reach the right side of the Vintage Fabric placemat.

Now, once you are finished weaving you need to pull off any tape. Do this carefully so you do not unravel your Vintage Fabric placemat.

Now, turn the placemat face down on your table.

Folding one inch on all sides and carefully irons them down with a warm iron. Do not burn the Vintage Fabric.

Now, you can use no sew or your sewing machine to firmly sew these borders down.

I personally like to use a sewing machine that has been threaded with thread that matches my Vintage Fabric placemats. No sew will work, but may need some touch ups as the years go by.

You can also add any embellishments you want to these simple Vintage Fabric placemats. A vintage earring or button would look great sewn on in the to right corner!
