Pin Curls
Pin curls were popular from the 1920s through the 1950s, and will give your curls an instantly recognizable vintage flair. You can either sleep in big hair curlers to shape your curls into big ringlets or use your natural curls. Apply mousse or gel to wet or dry hair to shape your curls into big, wavy ringlets. In most cases, curly hair shapes better when wet. When styling your hair into pin curls, pin your dried and styled curls with bobby pins at the top of your head by placing the bobby pin at the level of your eye. Mist hairspray on your head, and you have created a classic 1950s 'do that will add elegance to your curls.
Headbands
Headbands were extremely popular throughout the 1940s through the '70s and even into the 1980s. Moreover, they can be used to simulate a 1950s pin-up girl or a 1970s flower child.
To create a vintage '50s look, pull your curls straight back from your head into a headband. Then, push the headband forward towards your forehead to push your hair up and create volume in front of the headband. Shape the curls falling from the back of the headband into place with mousse or gel. Spray your curls with hairspray to set the style.
For a '70s look, part your hair down the center and pull your curls into a headband, leaving the parted hair in the headband tight against your head. Shape the remaining curls and finish with hairspray.
