Stone Hill Winery and Restaurant sits on top of a hill overlooking the scenic town of Hermann. Established in 1847, Stone Hill Winery was at one time the second largest winery in the United States, according to information from Stone Hill. The winery was prosperous until 1920, when Prohibition brought an end to the boom times for the wineries. The winery was closed and fell into disrepair. In 1965 it was purchased by Jim and Betty Held, who restored the historic winery. Stone Hill Winery is now on the National Register of Historic Places.
We dined at Stone Hill's Vintage Restaurant of Hermann during a recent visit. The entire dining experience was delightful. The restaurant, located in a restored carriage house horse barn, had an old fashioned, romantic atmosphere. Some of the booths were situated in the former horse stalls, which looked cozy.
The hostess seated us on a booth and handed us the large menus and wine list and said the server would be with us shortly, which she was. The server was helpful in our wine selection. Stone Hill offers a good selection of wines, including red, white, sparkling and sweet,. I chose the Hermansberger wine, which was described as a dry red wine, similar to a Merlot. My companion chose the sweeter Concord Grape Wine.
We perused the menu, which offered a tempting selection of German specialties, steaks, fish and more. Some of the German specialties included the German style schnitzel, sauerbraten and knackwurst. Tempting dishes included the Paprika Chicken, Trout Almondine, Beef Filet and Grilled Salmon Filet.
The server returned with a bread basket and our wine and answered our questions about the menu. My companion chose the German Style Schnitzel ($12.95) with red cabbage, while I ordered the Paprika Chicken ($13.95) with wild rice. My companion ordered the French Orion Soup, while I ordered the soup of the night, which was creamy mushroom.
The German Style Schnitzel was a breaded pork cutlet, served with a sauce, along with a choice of sides. She selected red cabbage and spaetzle for her side. The Paprika Chicken was well seasoned and was served with a sauce. The plates of food were served in generous portions.
We enjoyed the entire meal, from wine to soup to main dishes. Unfortunately, we were too full for dessert, because there were tempting choices on the dessert tray presented by the server. The Black Forest Cake looked especially delicious.
I would recommend Vintage Restaurant at Stone Hill Restaurant for an enjoyable meal in a rustic, but romantic, atmosphere.
