1. Time: how much time can you invest in the preparation and installation of the new floor?
2. You vs. Pro: What methods of installation are required for each floor type? Is it something you can do yourself or will you need to hire a professional? This will be an added expense.
3. Materials: will the floor you have chosen require extra materials for installation such as wood strips or sub flooring; tile cutters and saws?
4. Existing Floors: What condition is the existing floor? Will replacement require a big job of removing the old floor? Is a lot of preparatory work required before installing the new floor?
5. Height: Will the new floor add height to the floor? If so don't forget to include the labor and/or cost of shaving the door bottoms so that they will clear the new floor.
If you are like many families today, every penny counts. If it is a job you can do yourself, do not be afraid to tackle it.
