Violence: Should We Blame Video Games?
I always hear about parents blurting out ignorant phrases like: 'My son was killed because his murderer played video games!' Okay, not to mention the murderer lived in a society that broadcasts news daily which involved killings and other heinous crimes. Also, there's millions of killings a year that in no way involve video games but there's something else to blame for those crimes, right? What I mean is, the media just points a finger so the general public gets sucked in and start to fear something else. Then, the general public want to know more and before long, ratings rise.
People like different things and like the vast majority of gamers its for pure entertainment and fun. You can't abhor and blame the content of the gaming culture just because it doesn't fit in with your beliefs. Pointing fingers doesn't get anything done. For the dominant majority, you can't just simply lower all of the violence in video games because then we'd have to do the same for movies. And, Hollywood will never neglect its violent content.
Our world is obsessed with violence and lets not forget the history of basically every country is filled with bloodshed and atrocious acts. England and America have a past that is way more horrific than any video game I've ever played. So, stop blaming video games alone. That is all I hear getting blamed nowadays. When you were a kid the most popular toys were soldiers and Indians and cowboys. And how did the general child play with every toy they had? They made them fight.
If you grab every influence in the world which children are exposed too, then video games is only one avenue out of hundreds. In a broad view of things, video games are partly responsible for violence but even if video games became nice and friendly, nothing would change. They would still go to school and genetics would reign supreme.

I don't think violence is caused by video games, but I believe they desensitive the user to violence. The more violent the game, the more de-sensitized the user becomes. Young children and adolescents/teens are exceptionally vulnerable as they have not yet developed to a point where they clearly understand either consequences or the permanence of certain actions. Staying in communication with kids, opening up their worlds, and limiting video time (and violent content) minimize these negatives. Children exhibiting anti-social behaviors and/or poor impulse control should be especially limited.
This is a very touchy subject. I think violence cannot be solely blamed on video games. The final decision to commit a violent act is made by an individual action to do so. There are many negative influences around us that need to be addressed. Thanks for sharing your insight.
