A Walk in the Park

Neighborhood: Clinton Hill Brooklyn

About one-quarter of the crimes reported in the Brooklyn Paper's Police Blotter this week are violent crimes. 11 crimes are reported altogether; three were violent.

Sept. 21st - A masked robber armed with a gun attacked a man at 3:50 am on Carlton Ave.

Sept. 24th - Four (4!) men mugged a man, and beat him, in Fort Greene Park at 2:30 pm.

Sept. 26th - A man armed with a knife slashed a man's neck and hand on Flatbush Ave.

Walking around at 3:50 am is dangerous. However, we should be able to walk safely in the Park at 2:30 in the afternoon.

There have been a lot of problems in Fort Greene Park lately. So, watch yourselves when there or in any park. Try not to go to parks alone. Go with friends. No park-enthusiastic friends? Bring your dog. No dog? Go to the ASPCA or walk a friend's dog. No friends with dogs? Get paid to walk someone's dog.

Be aware of people coming up behind you. Don't walk with music playing in your earphones so you can hear attackers coming.

Pepper spray may be purchased legally in NYC with ID. Travel-sized hairspray bottles are not the best idea because hairspray only stings a little. However, when filled with bleach they become more potent.

I'm not advocating that you fight with an assailant because you may be injured. Use sprays ONLY if you have a clear opportunity to run and are physically fit to run. If attacked, assess the situation and use your best judgment.

Non-violent crimes committed last week were:

2 phone grabs
1 mugging
1 home invasion
3 motorcycles thefts
1 car theft

Stay safe till next time, Clinton Hill.

From the skyscrapers of NYC, I face strength. From the people of NYC, I gain understanding. And from the heart of NYC, I feel inspiration. So, I tend to write about the city quite a bit.  View profile
