Violin Vs. Fiddle

Poem Written for a Creative Writing Course

Zane Ewton
I don't want to play the violin
I want to play the fiddle

My band would play in the city
Onstage I would stand left of middle

The drummer would thwack, thump and rattle
While the singer scats hum-doo-dee-diddle-diddle

My teacher didn't care for country or rock
He preached concertos and the gospel of Bach

The limelight on stage, the adoring fans
Churches, weddings and recitals aren't in my plans

Quit the violin, throw away that fiddle
Tell that teacher something that ain't no riddle

Run past that baby grand and into my car
I think I might pick up the guitar

It's my understanding there are a few differences between a violin and a fiddle. A fiddle usually has metal strings while a violin has gut strings, and a fiddle has fine tuners. But I could be wrong about that. However, when I was first learning to play the fiddle, my cat would leave the room when she saw me open the case. As would my family.

I love this!! I always say that if I were going to play in instrument, it would be the fiddle! Unfortunately, I have zero musical talent and I would probobly scare the neighbors if I ever tried to play!!!

my uncle plays the fiddle and the banjo. lol he would tell you that you were wrong if you told him he played a violin.

I had a friend once who played the fiddle, he always insisted it was a fiddle and not a violin but we always called it a violin anyway because we knew he hated it. It was fun!
