Virginia Tech Lifts Alert, No Gunman Found

Abby Greenhill

Virginia Tech has one of the most beautiful campuses you can imagine. A few years ago while my husband and I were staying in the area we took a ride through the campus and thought it was an amazing location/ Among that beauty today three students reported that they saw a man with a gun on campus a little after 9:00 am this morning. The three who saw the man are attending camp at the college.

They say they spotted a white man carrying something that was covered by a cloth and they 'thought' it was a gun he was concealing. According to the witnesses, the man was walking fast. An alert was issued and students were warned to stay indoors.

This must have brought back horrible reminders of that day in 2007 when a shooting spree caused the deaths of 32 people and utter despair and confusion on the beautiful Virginia Tech campus. That gunman finally killed himself.

Along with campus police, 4 other police departments were looking for the man, but no one was found. They released a sketch of the man about 1:00 pm and the search continued. There will be a rather large police presence on the Virginia Tech campus for a while, which should be reassuring to all on campus.

The man today was described as a white male with light brown hair, about 6 feet tall, and he was walking toward the volleyball court. He was dressed in a blue/white shirt with stripes, gray shorts and he had brown sandals on. He was not wearing glasses. He did not have a mustache, beard of other facial hair.

If you were on the Virginia Tech campus this morning and you saw the man, or think you saw him, you need to report it to the police. Anyone with any information at all, no matter how insignificant you think it is, you need to tell the police.

As it stands, the campus ban has been lifted. But when you are on Virginia Tech campus, or any other campus, keep you eyes open and be alert for any activity that seems out of place.

If you were on campus, please also let your family and friends know that you are safe and sound, they will be worrying.
