According to the American Bar Association (ABA), a Paralegal or Legal Assistant is a person qualified by either education or experiences, and retained by law offices, governmental agencies and various entities, to perform substantive legal work under the close supervision of an attorney.
On most occasions, Virtual Paralegals are independent contractors, hired by a lawyer or law firms to provide legal support on as-needed basis; working remotely through the use technology.
Because of the kind of set-up both parties, the lawyer(s) and the virtual paralegal(s) agreed upon, the latter does not require to report in the office personally. He/she can do the work anywhere at any time through a secured internet connection, and within the time frame allowed.
The utilization of these legal professionals is continuously growing, especially these days that most lawsuits (malpractice) of attorneys rooted to missing statutory deadlines. If the firm experiences overwhelming workloads, the virtual paralegals can assist on specialized tasks in an efficient and speedy manner, and ease the stress of the firm from getting sued for malpractice.
Virtual Paralegals are mostly used for e-discoveries, bankruptcies; foreclosures and evictions, likewise in litigations.
Their pay rate ranges from $30 to $100 per hour, or a salary of $2000 to $5000 per month, which is close to a junior attorneys' fee already. The big difference is that their employers are not required at all to give them any benefits.
But, although, the demand for virtual paralegals continues to sky-rocket, risks also exist. Potential employer should always carefully consider confidentiality and existence of any conflicts of interests. What is safe is for them to carefully consider the years of experience and proven track records prior to hiring or utilizing these paralegals. Also, check for certifications, professional licenses and affiliations; because having those does not only guarantee their quality of work, but their credibility and integrity as well.
And, bottom line; utilization of these legal professionals should serve their purpose; and that is to meet time-sensitive tasks efficiently and at a very affordable cost. To able to serve clients in the best possible manner, at the same time generate profits for the firm.
