Virtual private servers are fast becoming the cost effective way for small and medium-sized businesses to host their website. Also known as virtual web hosting, it basically lets the owner of the website share a web server with other websites. You do not have to pay for a dedicated server which would host only your website, you share the bandwidth with other sites that may not get very much traffic. You won't have to put up with availability, access or speed of use issues with a virtual private server and your visitors will not know the difference. Since the websites will more than likely not be accessed at the same time or have heavy traffic, it is a cost effective way get started. Hopefully you will need more bandwidth as your website becomes more popular.

The main advantage of a virtual private server is cost. A dedicated server would only have your site and you would be paying all the costs for the server. The virtual private server is shared by many sites and so is the cost for that server. Virtual private servers have technical support and can repair any problems you are having around the clock. Some companies will even help you with your website design. Many of the VPS companies will let you try out some of the features so you can find just what you want on your site. They also keep their servers secure from hackers.

A disadvantage is a poorly managed virtual private server. If the other websites that share your server have high traffic or the server is not managed properly, you could experience slow loading, crawling navigation and your site could even crash to a halt. If you experience difficulty with bandwidth use or problems with your site, you need to address them with the web hosting management immediately before your site gets a bad reputation. Most companies are experienced and do not have problems with too many sites on one server. They will offer packages of different bandwidth use. Choose the package that best suits your expected needs and upgrade if necessary.

Make sure that the company you choose puts like websites with like needs together. One thing you need to find out before choosing a VPS company is who the other websites are that you will share your server with. You will all have the same IP address and if the other websites are engaged in illegal or inappropriate activities and they are banned from the search engines, you will be also. Lastly, on some servers you will also be sharing the software components with the other users on your server so you will lose control to individually set the settings you desire. Make sure that the server you choose uses virtualization software. That way each website can have control of their own site, including running different operating systems and personal control of the applications and independent rebooting if needed. Most virtual private server companies are professional and technically savvy and will guide you to the best package to fit your needs.
