If you would like to know more about the Visa Gift Card and how it works, I suggest that you go online at http://usa.visa.com/personal/cards/prepaid/gift_card_how.html. This site will tell you everything you would like to know about the Visa Gift Card, and how to use it.
The Visa Gift Card needs to be activated before it is used. Depending upon where you brought the card, you might need to activate it before you give it. Some stores automatically activate them at the time they are bought; other do not. I always ask, because if I am sending them through the mail, I do not want them activated until they are received. That way, if by chance they are lost in the mail, I can get a replacement card.
Besides going online, there are many stores and places of businesses where the Visa Gift Cards can be purchased. Safeway, K-Mart, Ross and Barnes & Noble are a few of the ones that I am aware of. I usually buy mine at Safeway. The Visa Gift Cards at our Safeway come in increment values of $25.00, $50.00 and $100.00. If you purchase your Visa Gift Card at your bank or credit union, you can load the card with any amount between $10.00 and $500.00. These are the minimum and maximum amounts. Go online to http://visa.via.infonow.net/locator/giftcard/jsp/index.jsp, if you would like to find a financial institution nearest you, in which to purchase a Visa Gift Card for Christmas 2008.
There is a toll-free number on the back of each Visa Gift Card in which the holder can call and check the balance of the card. Not all stores have the ability to check the balance of remaining funds on the card. The businesses that do have the ability are AT&T Wireless, Chevron, Shell and Walgreen's. Yes, gas can be purchased with these Visa Gift Cards as well.
There is one important thing to tell the person who is the recipient of your Visa Gift Card. When they slide the card through the scanner, they should make sure and push the "credit" button. Since the Visa Gift Card does not come with a PIN number, and if they push the debit by accident, the purchase will come back 'declined.'
You will be amazed at how much your kids and grandkids love getting the Visa Gift Card as a gift or stocking stuffer at Christmas. It's a personal gift that is a little bit safer than money, and you don't have to shop around for hours hoping that you get something that they will like.
