Visions of the Night

Jeanne Dininni
The sun is gone and nature falls to sleeping,
As shadows fill the mirror of my mind.
It seems those secret dreams of pomp and splendor
Pursue the sun beyond the resting trees.

The day is done and all now lies in silence.
As quiet is the prodding of my soul.
I lie, content to watch the dark enfolding
Ambitions, visions, fancies I have known.

Daylight is past; the silver cast of moonlight
Has dulled the deepest yearnings of my heart.
I long to sleep; let others keep the vigil
In quest of life's illusive fantasies.

The darkness strays from dawn's first rays of sunlight,
And with its glow my spirit is renewed.
I sense the doubts of evening leaving softly,
Like dew evaporating from the leaves.

With each new day the dark night is forgotten.
The warming sun brings growing new resolve
To reach for goals we'd never but imagine
If dreams were simply visions of the night.
