Allahabad is one of the oldest cities of India that is situated in the State of Uttar Pradesh in India. This city is also known as Prayag as lord Brahma performed Yajna here. This city is famous for the triveni sangam of the three most holy rivers of India, namely Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati. Saraswati is hidden and flows underground. The recent city of Allahabad was established in the year 1575 by Mogul king Akbar. The large fort was also constructed by him at the holy place of sangam. The kumbha and ardhkumbha fairs are held here at every 12 and 6 years respectively. Magh fair is also arranged every year in the month of January here. Allahabad was a big military headquarter during the British rule. It is also famous for Allahabad University and as a birth place of Pandit Nehru. Allahabad has a population of around 110 thousands and has area of around 65 square kilometers.

Allahabad is not having an airport, but the airports of Varanasi and Kanpur are the nearest airports. It is well connected by train from Delhi and other major metropolitan cities of India. You can also reach Allahabad by road through buses and hired taxis or cars. There are many hotels available here for staying comfortably here. Hotel Mayur, Finaro, Vilas, Samrat, Royal, Presidency and Yatrik are some of the luxury hotels here at Allahabad. We had stayed at Hotel Yatrik that is situated in the middle of the city and is very convenient to stay. The tariff is around Rs.1600 ($40) per day for a double room including the continental breakfast. It is better to visit Allahabad during the winter as summer is very hot here.

There are many famous sites seeing places to be visited here. The first and most important is triveni sangam. This sangam of 3 rivers can be seen easily as the colors of the water of both the rivers, Ganga and Yamuna are different. Water of Ganga is white, while the water of Yamuna is blackish. It is very sacred and holy to take bath here at the sangam. You can reach at the sangam by a rowing boat and can take bath exactly at the sangam point. Hanuman temple is the next place that is located on the sangam. This statue of Hanuman is in sleeping posture and sinks in the water of River Ganga during the high flood. Patalpuri temple is the next spot, located at the gate of the fort. This temple is located underground and has the statues of 24 Hindu gods. Akshaya Vat is also located at this Patalpuri temple only and the people were committing suicide by jumping from this tree to reach to heaven directly during ancient days. Anand Bhuvan is the building, where Nehru family was staying. This building is now converted in to the national monument, which has lot of rare photos of Nehru family. Late Prime minister of India Mrs. Indira Gandhi was born here at this house. This building now belongs to the Congress party. The durg made by King Akbar is also worth seeing spot. This fort is around 600 years old and provides nice view of the triveni sangam from its top. The near-by excursion like Shrungdharpur is also worth visiting. Shrungdharpur has a place, called Ram chaura, where lord Ram had stayed for the night, while going to the forest. Lord Ram had crossed the river in the boat at this place. It is around 24 miles away from Allahabad.

The city of Allahabad changes completely during the time of Magh fair, and the kumbha and ardh Kumbha fairs as millions of people come here to take holy and sacred bath at sangam. Allahabad is the most famous spot of pilgrimage for Hindus. Hindus consider their life as incomplete till the holy deep is taken in to the triveni sangam. The city of Allahabad remains full of pilgrims throughout the year, particularly during any religious days like full moon days and festivals like Rakhi and others. How about planning a trip to this holy city of Allahabad during your next visit to India?
