Are you looking for something new and exciting to do in the Asheville area of North Carolina? Are you tired of the same things going on every weekend, or perhaps tired of wasting your mind and time away in front of the television? Then you need to try visiting this interesting museum, located on the lower level of the Pack Place Education, Arts and Science Center on the historic Pack Square at Biltmore and Patton avenues in the pretty downtown area of Asheville, North Carolina.

It's a really fun and affordable thing to take the kids and do, or you yourself! Admission is only $6 for adults, $5 for students and kids between 4 and 17, and free for kids under 4 years of age. Plus the museum is built in such a way that makes it wheelchair accessible! It's an educational museum with lots of interesting exhibits of specimens. There's also a great gift/souvenir shop with some awesome little things like ancient crystal-filled geodes plucked from Chihuahua, Mexico. Just ask for it to be cracked in half while you're here, and see the beauty inside the ugly rock!

The museum was created by Burnham Standish Colburn, who was an engineer and bank president in the Asheville area. He and his brother helped create and found the Southern Appalachian Mineral Society which is still in operation to this day!

Some of the awesome exhibits and the museum include the Hall of Minerals, with over 4,500 specimens from around the globe, and more than 350 minerals found right here in North Carolina. There's also the Grove Stone Room with awesome displays that allow you to explore North Carolina's geology. Plus, there are displays that let you explore and understand volcanoes, earthquakes, and other global processes as well. Or check out the exhibit called the History of Mining in North Carolina. It's really interesting because it goes back to long ago when the Indians were here, and moves on up to our time to show all the activity that has taken place here and where the gem pockets were discovered.

All in all, you will love this museum as I do. It's something out of the ordinary to do perhaps on the weekend when you want a little more mental stimulation. It's also a great place to go with your sweetheart if you are dating and want something different to do! Check it out, and make sure to visit their website as well to get a real bird's eye view!
