Visit Endert's Beach

One of the Top Secluded Beaches in the World

Bible Doc
When my wife and I visited my brother and his wife in Crescent City, California, we saw an article in the local newspaper regarding the top ten secluded beaches in the world. One of them happened to be Endert's Beach located near Crescent City. The beach faces toward the Crescent City Harbor, the site, in 1964, of the worst tsunami to hit the United States. [See my Associated Content article about that tsunami.] When I got back home, I found a website listing the ten secluded beaches.

One day my brother and his wife took my wife and me on a day trip to Endert's Beach. The beach is located three miles south of Crescent City off Highway 101. The easy part of the trip was driving to the parking lot. The harder part was walking from the parking lot down to the beach. The information about the park says that the walk is half a mile with a drop of 500 feet. I thought the walk was over a mile, but whatever the distance, the walk is pleasant...if you forget that later you will have to walk back up! The hardest part of the trip was that walk back up to the parking lot.

As we neared the beach, we noticed a tent that had been pitched on the beach. Nickel Creek Campground is located next to the beach. If you are looking for a place for a private party or some time alone with a special friend, Endert's is the place to go. [Keep in mind that an unexpected tsunami hitting the beach while you are camped there would be a disaster!]

After a leisurely walk down the path, we finally arrived at the beach. It didn't take much of a look to see that the beach and the surrounding area had a volcanic origin. Rather than the brown or white sand that is typical of many beaches, the sand at Endert's Beach is black. The appearance of rock formations in the area indicates lava flows. The overall effect of the beach, to me, is one of a rugged beauty, a beauty that one finds in Hawaii, for example.

While you are in the area, you might want to visit the Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park and/or the Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park, both of which are located near Crescent City. Crescent City itself is a small town with a seaside flavor. Except for the July 4th holiday, the town maintains a quiet lifestyle. Crescent City is also known as a place for whale watching.

Because of its location, Endert's Beach is not generally crowded. For good reason, it's one of the most secluded beaches in the world.
