James Dean and Fairmont, Indiana become the place to be in Indiana if you are a movie buff and especially if you love James Dean during mid-September each year. That is when hoards of James Dean fans rush to Fairmont, Indiana for the James Dean festival and get to rummage through scads of his movie memorabilia. There is also a James Dean Run during this festival, a car show, and a James Dean look- alike contest.
Of course, fans, also visit his gravesite which is scattered with flowers and kisses.
Recently, the town of Fairmont has also started to honor another hometown celebrity, Jim Davis, the creator of Garfield, that whimsical, clever tiger cat, who is a household word to cat-lovers all over the world.
Fairmont, Indiana is located approximately 60 miles south of Fort Wayne, Indiana so it makes a nice road trip for dwellers of the Summit City. The Fairmont Historical Museum is primarily devoted to their home town movie icon, James Dean. It is located at 203 E. Washington in Fairmont between Walnut and Sycamore.
Visitors to the Fairmont Historical Museum are welcome from March to November, however, from Monday through Saturday 10am- 5pm and Sunday, 12-5.
Speaking from a personal viewpoint, I must say, I had a nostalgic feeling standing at the gravesite of this transformative figure in American cinematic history. It was an autumn day, and I could almost feel the spirit of the young boy who might have walked this area.
And, when I found myself walking through the museum and seeing the many photos and artifacts that were all about James Dean, there was no doubt in my mind why James Dean is just another name for cool.
