Well Known and Not so Well Known Haunted Areas of Boston

Jan S
Boston has a long violent history, long enough to conjure up visions of the American Revolution and not so well known infamous family squabbles and murders. From the days the Quakers ruled the area with an iron hand to the more recent 20th Century Boston Strangler murders, Boston has a bloody history. With such a rich history Boston it is no wonder that Boston has it's share of ghostly happenings. Boston boasts a theater, several private homes and more than one hotel that are all reputed to be haunted. Visiting some of those places is not only allowed but encouraged by tour guides and owners of those establishments.

One of the more well known haunted places in Boston is the Cutler-Majestic Theatre which is located on the grounds of Emerson College. It was built in 1903 and has 4 ghosts that call the place "home". With a young child, a man (who was reputed to be one of Boston's former mayors) and a young couple that haunt the place it is reported to be the most haunted building in Boston. It is still a full functioning theatre and can be visited during normal operating hours.

The Boston Common was the site of several hangings and deaths due to the zealot Quakers during the 1600's. Salem was not the only site of witchcraft trials, Boston had them too. Two women were reported to be hung in the area for the crime of witchcraft and there are reporting's of ghostly sightings of their ghostly apparitions. This area is on many of the walking tours that are available in Boston.

There are numerous tour companies that have walking tours of Boston's many cemeteries, all done at night of course. Those tour companies can be easily found on the internet by just typing in the words "haunted Boston" into any search engine. Some of those tour companies claim to have exclusive tours of private homes that are reported to be haunted.

Touring areas that are reported to be haunted can give someone looking for a more unusual vacation just what they are looking for. True hauntings are not to be taken lightly since these are not your normal Halloween haunted houses that are full of tricks. If you scare easily or have young children this type of tour is not recommended for you. If on the other hand you are the adventurous type that is not easily scared then you might be in for a treat.

Take a camera that takes good low light images with you and you might just get the photo that will become a family legend or the next hot item on the nightly news.
