Hiawassee, Georgia is a quaint lakeside town located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Northeast Georgia. Although places like the Bavarian hamlet of Helen, Georgia may get all the press and attention, Hiawassee provides a great Georgia weekend or week long getaway. Hiawassee is the gateway to Lake Chatuge, and home to the renowned Georgia Mountain Festival, where those in the know find their way every year for the very best of festivals and festival grounds.
Here are seven great activities to do in Hiawassee, Georgia. This fast tips guide will help you navigate the area. After you visit a few times and come back--and you will come back--you will know the area like a pro. Hiawassee is a delight for singles groups, couples and families.
Take Advantage of Lake Chatuge
There are sightseeing boating trips, and many marinas and boat rental stops all over Lake Chatuge. You can also go water skiing in warm weather or spend the afternoon fishing. Take a romantic boat ride in the afternoon or evening, or just hang out lakeside. Lake Chatuge is beautiful and the launching point for many Northeast Georgia Mountains adventures.
Hike to the top of Brasstown Bald
Georgia's highest point straddles several northeast Georgia counties, and the base of it is just about fifteen-twenty minutes away from downtown Hiawassee. You drive to about the halfway point of the mountain up a very steep and curvy road, where you will then reach a very large parking lot. As this point, you can take a shuttle the remainder of the way, or take one of the hiking trails. The hiking trails have a lot of steps and seem to go straight up. This is a lot of fun, but I would not recommend strollers on the path or doing it if you are out of shape.
Romantic Times at Brasstown Valley Resort
For a true couple's romantic retreat, look no further than Brasstown Valley Resort. Check into luxurious surroundings, eat exquisite food at the Saturday night Prime Rib Buffet, play golf and relax at the Equani Spa, where timeless Cherokee rituals are used in massage and other indulgences. There are several packages available at this one of a kind peaceful retreat. All sorts of nice accommodations are available.
Take in a Concert at Anderson Music Hall
Located within the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds in Hiawassee, this venue that seats 2,900 boasts various renowned musical acts throughout the year. It is central to the Fall Festival which brings in acts every single day of the annual nine-day event each October.
Go Play Some Games and Eat Some Pizza
Have kids or are you a kid at heart? Burn off some energy and head over to Fun World at Fieldstone Resort in Young Harris, which is also in Towns County. Here you will find Laser Tag, a four face climbing wall, indoor batting cages, go cart racing, indoor miniature golf, a Toddler Town, arcade games, and much more.
Indulge in Fine Mountain Arts
Located on Big Sky Drive and above the Holiday Inn Express in downtown Hiawassee, this artisan shop on a perch is a non-profit. The items for sale here are all hand-crafted by artisan from over eighty artists from Northeastern Georgia, Southwestern North Carolina and Southeastern Tennessee. The Artworks Artisan Centre offers original art and paintings, decorative items for the home, hand crafted jewelry, and textiles.
Purchase Some Memories for Your Christmas Tree
For some incredible Christmas ornaments and other Christmas collectibles, check out Always Christmas at the Shoppes of Tater Ridge. Located right in Hiawassee at 715 Main Street, you will find treats from Santa Galore! Take home a Christmas Tree Memory from your visit to Hiawassee, Georgia. Many other artisan shops are in the area and also have a wide selection of unique handcrafted Christmas treasures.
