At the end of summer 1811, William Henry Harrison, then governor of the territory of Indiana, organized a military expedition against the growing threat of the federation of Indian tribes that have been following the teachings of the Shawnee brothers, Tecumseh and the Tenskwatawa, also known as the prophet. Prophetstown was the headquarters of this new alliance of Native Americans.
William Henry Harrison went out from Vincennes, Indiana, front of a small army of about one thousand men. He met with representatives of the Prophet on November 6, 1811, in Prophetstown, and told them that the demands brought on behalf of the American government. The general then noticed a warrior camp in song about a mile northwest of the city of the Prophet.
Fearing the cunning and war craft of the Prophet, General Harrison instructed his men to sleep fully battle ready and had large detail of men for the doing duty as sentries.. On the morning of November 7, 1811, after 4am, the military camp was attacked by the Prophet. General William Henry Harrison and his army defeated the Indian Confederacy of Prophet at the battle of Tippecanoe; this military action ended all the significant Indian conflicts in the Midwest.
