George Wright Golf Course: Everything a Boston Golfer Needs
About George Wright
George Wright was a Baseball Hall of Fame shortstop who played in the late 1800's for Cincinnati Red Stockings and later for the Boston Red Stockings. After his baseball years, he settled in Boston, MA and operated his successful Wright and Ditson Sporting Goods store. The main consumer product was golf clubs and golf equipment, so he saw fit to help develop the first municipal course at Franklin Park in 1890. Later in life, he donated a 156-acre estate in Hyde Park for building a second municipal (public) golf course within the city of Boston. The site was less than ideal for just about any use because of swampy areas, large rock outcroppings and buried rock ledge. Internationally famous course designer, Donald Ross, drew up the design and in 1932 his associate, Walter Johnson took on the project engineer and construction for the Massachusetts Metropolitan District Commission, funded by $1,000,000 of WPA money.
George Wright Golf Course
The George Wright Golf Course has attained status as one of the greatest feats of engineering and construction in the history of golf. Ledge excavation required 60,000 pounds of dynamite, 72,000 cubic yards of dirt filled the swampy areas and incredibly over 11 miles of drainage pipe was installed! Employment records show that at one point between 1932 and 1938, 1,000 men were working on the construction.
The popular golf website Golflink ranks this course number 44 of the top 100 public courses in the United States. Golfweek magazine in 2009 ranked this the 14th best municipal golf course in the country. One feature that yields those high ratings and makes golfing more relaxing is the compact golf course where 18 holes can be played in a couple of hours. The entire course is surrounded by a high stonewall, surely gathered from the 60,000 pounds of dynamiting. The terrain is gently rolling with tight tree lined fairways and small greens.
The legendary Donald Ross designed over 600 quality courses and included his mandatory three standard requirements at George Wright: each hole has to present a different problem, every stroke has to require full concentration, and each hole has to take advantage of surroundings and not waste space. The George Wright Golf Course passes with flying colors!
