As we got out of our old white Dodge car we noticed that the mist was actually closer to a drizzle. So we dawned our green plastic rain ponchos. It was too big for our four year old so we cut it to size. It was perfect. With every one ready, we set out for the woods.
It was a steep walk down the trail, but the beauty of the surroundings and the mist made you swear that you could hear elves playing in the woods nearby. It was an enchanted morning.
As we walked through the woods we found our first site to visit. It was a rock shelter. It was so inviting that we could hardly wait to go in and investigate. When we went in the magic of the day had grown significantly. This rock shelter was huge.
When we entered this rock shelter, the first thing you saw was the green lush valley tinted with fog and mist below you. The entrance to the shelter was like none I had ever seen before. It had arched doorways that reminded me of the arched walkways of the old European monasteries you see in the movies.
As we explored this wonderful place we could very easily imagine what this looked like during the heyday of the American Indian. It had to be a busy place. You could imagine in your mind's eye the families gathering for meals. The children huddled by the fire at night. Of the men working on their tools for tomorrow's hunt. It is a beautiful place that is filled with the air of history.
Then the sun broke through the mist and the fog and it was time to leave. That was 24 years ago. Today my 4 year old is now 28 and she is taking her four year old to see the cave that gave her a sense of awe and wonder. It is so wonderful to know that things change but at the same time remain a part of you and your history.
This place of wonder is called Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio. It is a wonderful park with many, many sights to see. If you are looking for a place to go and get back to nature, share some experiences with the ones you love then this is a place. I highly recommend it.
