One great place to camp in the town of Lake City, MN is the Hok-Si-La Campground. This campground is conveniently located on the north side of Lake City, MN just off Highway 61. As you are heading south on highway 61, the Hok-Si-La Campground will be on your left, the east side of the highway. You will see a large wooden sign with the campground's name, Hok-Si-La on it. Turn here and you will enter the beautiful, wooded campground.
As you enter, you will see a large parking lot, continue on the road and you will see the main campground buildings. Cars are not allowed in the campground, so you must unload and promptly return your car to the parking lot which is centrally located. Included in this group of buildings are two bathhouses, each complete with showers, a large dining hall, and some picnic shelters. The dining hall can seat and serve up to 200 people if you wish to use it. There is also a small wooden chapel located on the north side hidden in the woods. This chapel has been used for many small gatherings and devotion times. There is also a main camp shelter that has a small grocery/convenience store for you use.
Just beyond the two bathhouses, you will find a small path that leads to the beach. The beach at the Hok-Si-La campground is one of the best beaches on Lake Pepin. The beach stretches 100 yards and is full of fresh river sand. The water drops off quickly provided a nice swimming area. You can also dock your boat here as there is a small boat landing nearby.
There is also a large playground area complete with slides, swings, sandbox area, and even play tractors and cars! There are tunnels and bridges and kids never tire of this playground! There are many benches located around the playground so you can sit and read while you observe your children safely playing.
The Hok-Si-La campground does not have RV and camper facilities, but it has many camping sites. There are several large group camping areas where you can fit up to 50 tents. There are camp sites that are suited with electricity, as well as some rustic sites with no electricity. Each campsite has a picnic table and fire ring for your convenience.
There are also several hiking trails throughout the campsite with great views of Lake Pepin. There is a nature center called the interpretive center. This facility is not open all the time, so you will need to contact the campground to find out it's times of opening and closing.
There is also a sand volleyball court and a small basket ball court. With all these amenities any camping trip is complete. Next time you are traveling through southeast Minnesota, be sure to visit the small town of Lake City and stay a night or two at the Hok-Si-La campground!
