Indian Echo Caverns has been a commercial tourist attraction since 1929 when John Bieber opened it just as The Great Depression was about to begin. He installed ramps and steps and electric lights to make access easier since the cave wasn't laid out with tourists in mind. The 200 foot descent into the earth needed a more constant grade of descent and the abrupt changes of elevation required steps to make tourists more likely to come or to return with their friends. The Great Depression cost John Bieber his business as it did many but the caverns were bought in 1942 by Hershey, Pennsylvania native Edward Swartz. Mr Swartz and his descendants have owned the Indian Echo Caverns to this day.

The Indian Echo Caverns is a great place for visitors since it is situated just a few minutes drive away from Hershey, Pennsylvania where you can tour the factory where the famous chocolate is made. I've been on this tour twice (as a kid) and it's memorable for everyone. You'll always remember as you come into town the light poles are capped with giant Hershey's kisses. Gettysburg and the famous battlefield are also not far away so a day trip or stay-cation could include these places if you're planning a short vacation.

The Indian Echo Caverns has a 45-minute tour that is made easier by the ramps and concrete steps and electric lighting inside. There is free parking for your car and covered picnic areas for you to relax while you kids are exploring. A playground is on site to entertain the little kids and a petting zoo is a nice feature that makes this a happy atmosphere to bring kids.

Educational tours at discounted rates are available for school groups. Call 717-566-8131 to plan a visit or to inquire about general questions you might have.

The tour through Indian Echo Caverns lasts 45 minutes and is guided by a knowledgeable guide who will explain the history of Indian Echo Caverns from a geological, historical, and cultural point of view. The geologic history is interesting to kids. As he or she tells you of native American Indians in the area you'll appreciate your surroundings. As America became a country way back when the cave saw settlers pass by and perhaps take shelter in the cave as they moved West. You'll hear many stories here of an emerging America.

Indian Echo Caverns has many programs available for girls and boys to earn their badges in numerous nature-related subjects. There are programs available for Webelos, Boy Scouts, and Brownies. Check the website to see what's offered and the prices of the programs.
