Just a few minutes walk down History Plaza is the John West Hunter House. It is the oldest structure in Birmingham and is one of the oldest framed structures in the state. The plank construction house was built in 1822, replacing the small log cabin that had been built in 1818.

Additions and siding were built sometime during the mid-1800s. The siding you see on the house today is the same that was installed during that time period.

The floor plan that is evident today is one that was typical in the 1840s. When the house was moved to the Historic Park in 1969, restoration to that floor plan was made.
