One can easily reach Kanyakumari by hired car, taxi or the bus from Chennai, Bangalore or any major cities of South India. There is no train connection for reaching to Kanyakumari. Almost all the tourists visiting South India make sure to visit this awesome place without fail. The place gets full of people during evening hours at the sea shore to witness one of the most beautiful sunset from this point. This is the place where the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi were dropped in the sea. Later on, famous Gandhi temple has been built here in his memory. The beauty of this Gandhi temple is that on 2nd October every year, which is the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, the rays of the sun directly fall on the statue of Mahatma Gandhi placed there in the temple exactly at 12 noon through a very small hole provided in the entrance of the temple. This is really a very unique feature of this temple. There is also a famous temple of goddess Devikumari, located exactly at the seashore. This temple is considered very holy and the pilgrims entering inside the temple have to wear the white Dhoti only. The tourists are not allowed inside the temple in any other attire like pants, shorts etc.
There is a very large rock near the Devikumari temple inside the sea. This rock is known as Vivekananda Rock. This is the place where Swami Vivekananda had set and thought continuously for 3 days and 3 nights as to how he should proceed to bring happiness to all the living people. The large Vivekananda center is constructed here behind this rock. The administration of all the Vivekananda centers in India, total 456 in number, is done through this place. Regular classes of Yoga and the Dhyana are held at this center at a time interval of every 2 months. These classes are for 10 days duration. Many foreign visitors make it a point to attend such courses. You can register for such courses at the Vivekananda Center here only. There are charges of about Rs.5000 ($125) for the course of 10 days. There is regular motor launch service to take all the tourists to Vivekananda Rock as it is situated in the middle of the sea. The views of both sunrise and sunset from this point are really breathtaking and can surely be treated as one of the highpoints of your life.
This is the place where you will love to stay for as many days as you can afford based on your time schedule. Most of the tourists stay here at least for about couple of days to fully enjoy and absorb the beauty of this unique place. There are some good hotels like Hotel Manikyam, Hotel Cap,Ttourist bungalow of State Government, and Devsthanam Rest House. One can get a double room here at the rates of around Rs.2000 ($50) per day. It would be preferable to book your hotel accommodation in advance so as to avoid last minute disappointment.
I would strongly urge all my AC friends to visit this most beautiful spot at least once in their life time. I am sure the person visiting this place at least once, shall not forget this most exquisite beauty spot of India during his remaining life.
