Visit the Lord Shiva Temple at Trambakeshwar Near Nasik in India

Harishrai Mehta
There are total twelve swayambhoo Shiva Lingams in India known as Jyotirlingams. All these places have become important places of pilgrimage for the worshippers of lord Shiva. One such temple is located at a small village of Trambak in the State of Maharashtra in India. This temple of lord Shiva is called Trambakeshwar Mahadev. Lord Shiva is considered the god of all Devs, hence is called Mahadev. Each Shiva worshipper wants to visit all these twelve temples where the swayambhoo lingams of lord Shiva are available. However, it may not be possible for all as some of these temples are located in the Himalayas Mountains range and are not easily reachable. However, temple of Trambakeshwar Mahadev is easily reachable from Mumbai and Nasik.

Trambakeshwar Mahadev temple is located around 20 miles away from Nasik and around 200 miles from Mumbai. It would be better to reach here by bus or hired car or taxi from Mumbai or Nasik. It would be better to stay at Nasik and visit Trambakeshwar temple from Nasik only. This temple is on the top of the mountain Brahmgiri. It is said that Gautam rishi performed tapa here on the mountain Brahmgiri for 18 years. Lord Shiva was very happy due to this tapa and allowed Gautam rishi to take most holy River Godavari to earth from this place. The origin of River Godavari is at this Brahmgiri Mountain and the lake Gangasagar has been formed here at the mountain Brahmgiri. All the sins get washed away when you take a bath here at this Gangasagar Lake. All the pilgrims make sure to take bath here. Though, the water is slightly dirty, a short bath here will not cause any problems. The temple is on the hill and you need to climb around 250 steps to reach up to the temple. The original lingam is kept underground and you have to pass through the underground tunnel to reach up to the lingam of lord Shiva. The top kalash of the temple is made of solid gold. The temple is very big and has wonderful stone art structures on the walls of the temple. This temple is considered as one of the holiest temples of India. There is a big fair arranged here every year on Maha Shivratri day, which is the birthday of lord Shiva. There is very heavy rush of pilgrims on this day.

There is a small dharmshala available at the base of the mountain Brahmgiri, where you can stay for night if you wish. However, as such, it is really not required to stay here for the night. It is advisable to reach back to your destination by late evening after visiting Trambakeshwar temple. Make sure to carry your own supply of bottled drinking water and the food as the quality of these items is not very hygienic here at the temple. There are few restaurants available near-by the temple but nothing much is available here except hot beverages like tea and coffee. Trambakeshwar temple is nicely decorated at the time of Kumbha and ardhKumbha fairs that are held at Nasik. However, make sure never to visit this place during such fairs as there are millions of people visiting Nasik during that period and it becomes almost impossible to get any type of facilities. There is a small market just outside of the temple, where some small items are available. The original rudrax malas are also available here at these shops. However, you must be able to identify the real rudrax. This is very difficult task and can be done by only the most experienced pilgrims.

If you are a staunch worshipper of lord Shiva and have not visited this famous temple, make sure to include it in your itinerary of India next time.
