Visit Mackinac Island: The Land of Beauty, History, and Fudge
A Perfect Escape from the Everyday Hassles of the Modern World
History buffs will feel right at home too, because history surrounds you. The location of Mackinac Island itself was home to tribal gatherings, and its rich fish poulation drew French traders and Jesuit Missionaries. The island was also a military settlement after the French and Indian War at Fort Mackinac, which you can still visit today, and after the Civil War, Mackinac Island boomed as a resort town. Tourists flocked here to relax in the healthy environment and panoramic scenery.
Are you a hopeless romantic? Mackinac Island is an enchanting location for weddings, honeymoons, and romantic getaways. There are a myriad of romantic cottages, bed & breakfasts, historic inns and resorts to choose from, such as the Grand Hotel, built in 1887. Not only is this hotel beautiful and luxurious, it was also the setting for two incredibly romantic movies: This TIme For Keeps in 1949 starring Jimmy Durante and Esther Williams, and the unforgettable classic Somewhere In Time in 1980 starring Jane Seymour and Christoher Reeve.
Mackinac Island is loaded with all sorts of sightseeing activites for everyone. Take a guided carriage tour, a tradition which began on the island in 1869. You'll see lovely points of interest and learn all about the history here. For high-sea adventure, embark on a luxurious ferry ride, see and visit historic lighthouses, or enjoy one of the many historic parks like Colonial Michilimackinac, Mill Creek, or Fort Mackinac.
You simply cannot talk about Mackinac Island and its history without mentioning fudge, because fudge is a huge part of its history. It has been stated that the finest fudge in the world is made here, and they've been doing it since 1889. Only the best ingredients are used, and every year, the tradition of fudge is honored with an annual fudge festival which allows visitors to try a wide array of fudge flavors, everything from chocolate, vanilla, peanut butter, to rich exotic types that might surprise you like goat's milk and Whitehouse fudge!
In Mackinac Island, you'll feel like you stepped back in time, and your worries and woes will disappear. With all the activities, exciting points of intersts, scenic beauty and seasonal events ongoing throughout the year, you'll never have to look far for something to do. Why not take a look?
