The State of Rajasthan in India is full of the historical monuments that tell us about the bravery of Rajputs. Each city and fort of Rajasthan has a blood shed history of its own and when we see any such place, be sure that the blood of thousands of patriotic Rajputs would have flowed at that place. Chitodgarh is one such place that is visited by thousands of tourists even today to see and feel the extreme bravery of the Rajput kings and their soldiers.

Chitodgarh was the capital city of Mevad, where King Udaysinh was ruling. He was fed up with the attacks of Mogul King Akbar and when King Akbar took possession of this fort in the year 1567, King Udaisinh has to run away to the Mountain range of Arvalli. Then, King Udaisinh established Udaipur as the capital of Mevad, based on the advice given by many palmists. Chitodgarh is also famous for the beauty of queen Padhmini. The mogul King Alloudin Khilji fell in love with the queen Padhmini and attacked the fort. The Rajput kings fought bravely but finally lost against the massive Mogul army. Thousands of Rajput soldiers died in the war. The queen Padhmini burnt herself alive in fire after the war.

The tourists keep on visiting this famous historical place to refresh the memory of the sacrifice given by the Rajputs. Chitodgarh can be reached by air from the nearest airport Udaipur, which is around 54 miles away. It is also a railway station and the trains like Chetak express passes through Chitodgarh. The regular buses also ply from all the major cities of Rajasthan for Chitodgarh. Chitodgarh is 330 miles away from Delhi, 108 miles away from Ajmer, and 192 miles away from Jaipur. There are many historical places to be visited here. The palace of Kumbharana is the most vital place of all. This palace is made in a very nice design with the most beautiful stone engravings on all its walls and gates. There is also one museum inside this palace, which has lots of specimens of the wars that took place with the Moguls. The sword of Rana Kumbha that he had used in the war against moguls is kept here in this museum.

The queen Padhmini's palace is the next place to be seen. This beautiful palace, made up of red bricks, is having the memory of the bravery of queen Padhmini. The exact spot at which the Mogul King Alloudin Khilji saw the face of queen Padhmini in the mirror after his victory can also be seen here at this palace. The Vijay pillar is the next spot. This pillar was made in the year 1440 as the remembrance of the brave fight given by King Kumbha Rana against mogul king Alloudin Khilji. This pillar was subsequently dedicated to the first Jain Tirthankar Adinath. There are many temples also situated here at Chitodgarh like Kalka Mata temple, Mira temple, and the Lord Shiva temple. The fort of Kumbhalgarh, which was built by King Rana Kumbha, is also worth visiting here. This fort has been made in such a way that even the King Akbar could conquer it only once and that too after stopping the drinking water supply to Chitodgarh. This fort is made in 12 square kilometer area and is having a height of 1100 feet from the mean sea level. There are many temples, water lakes and the farms inside this fort. There is also a small hotel that can provide the reasonable room in case somebody wants to stay on the fort to experience the fort environment.

There are many good hotels like Hotel Padhmini, Hotel Pratap Palace, Hotel Shalimar, Hotel Swagat, and Hotel Sanvaria here at Chitodgarh. All these hotels charge around Rs.2000 ($50) per day for a nice double room for one day. The authentic Rajasthani food items like Dal Bati and Churma are really worth trying here at Chitodgarh. You may plan around 2/3 days stay here at Chitodgarh to cover all the sites seeing places. The best season to visit Chitodgarh is during winter months of October to March.

I have visited almost all the historical places of Rajasthan but Chitodgarh is one of the unique places that bring the memory of old Rajput bravery alive before our eyes. Such a tourist place must not be missed at any cost while visiting Rajasthan in India.
