One can reach Kodai Canal by train, getting down at Kodai Canal station. The actual hill station is around 48 miles away from this railway station. All types of vehicles like taxis, buses, and hired cars are easily available from station. If you prefer to travel by road, you can reach via Chennai or Bangalore in a taxi or bus in around 8 hours drive. Kodai Canal is situated at the height of 7500 feet from the mean sea level. The most picturesque spot of this scenic hill station is its Lake. This famous Lake is only 3 miles away from the main town. This Lake was designed a British Engineer Sir Velvik. The water from one Small River is collected here so as to form a large Lake, having total area of 5 square miles. There is a boating service available in this lake.
The rowing boats, peddle boats, and motor boats in various capacities are available here on hire on hourly basis. The rent for one hour for a rowing boat having a capacity of 6 persons is Rs.500 ($12). You will need to drive this boat by yourself. The early morning and evening hours are the most pleasant here at the Lake. All the tourists present at Kodai Canal make sure to visit this Lake every day in the evening hours. There is a very beautiful garden here at the shore of the Lake. The light decoration in the evening hours is really fantastic. There are couples of famous water falls near this Lake known as Bershova falls, and Kasked Ferry falls. These falls serve as the picnic spots for the tourists. There is a very good asphalt road up to this Lake from the city of Kodai Canal. Hence, you can take your own vehicle up to the Lake and can take long walks along the shore of the Lake.
There are other places like Prospect point, Vembadi point, Sholamic point, Dolphin's Naz, Pillar rocks, Cokers rock, and the Perumal peek that must be seen during your visit. All these spots are located around 4 to 5 miles from the city of Kodai Canal. You can reach all these points by walking or by hired car or taxi. If you want to cover all these points in the minimum time, then, hiring car or taxi is the best option. You can cover all these points within two days. There is a meteorological laboratory situated here on the hills of Nandigi Puram. This laboratory was started in the year 1889 and is one of the oldest weather laboratories of India. There is a guide service also available to see all the sites seeing places of Kodai Canal. The charges of this service are around Rs.120 ($3) per day of 8 hours and must be utilized to know the detailed history of each place.
There are many nice and decent hotels available here for all types of pockets. Some of the best hotels are Carlton's Hotel, Hotel Sterling, Logan's guest house, and the Holiday Home, operated by the State Government. All these hotels charge around Rs.2000 ($50) per day for a nicely furnished double room. The excellent quality South Indian delicacies are available in all the restaurants of these hotels. Some of the famous restaurants also serve North Indian style Punjabi food delicacies. However, I would suggest trying south Indian food items here, which are really tasty, though slightly spicy. The best season to visit Kodai Canal is beginning of winter during October to December. It is suggested to book the hotel accommodation in advance to avoid last minute rush and hassles.
If your family wants to enjoy one of the most scenic and peaceful places in India at the most economical rates, you must visit this hill station during your next visit to India.
