Visit Nora Mill Granary and Step into the Past

Nora Mill Granary is a real old fashioned running mill established in 1876 and located in the historic area of Sautee-Nacoochee Valley which is one mile South from Alpine Village of Helen, Georgia and thirty minutes north from Dahlonega, Georgia. Nora Mills Granary lies on the Chattahoochee River and it is across the street from Habersham Winery. The mill is always running and produces all sorts of freshly grounded grains. It's fun to go there in person and observe the mill in operation. You can visit the country gift store where you taste samples of their many of home made recipes that they give you when you buy their grains. However, you can also purchase items online at http://www.noramill.com/

In the mill area, you have the grains which are corn and wheat products. They sell their own mixes of porridge, grits, corn meal, pre-mixed corn bread, flours, waffle and pancake mixes, just to name a few.

My favorite thing to buy is "Grandma's Bisquick and Pancake Mix". They attach recipes to many of their pre mixes. There are two special recipes that I get rave reviews on. The first one is "Grandma's Chess Pie". Now, this is a southern dessert. However, chess pies are made differently from what I have been told compared to Nora Mill's recipe. The pie does not have a crust. It comes out like almost a custard pudding cake texture. It is a very unique dessert. When you add strawberries and whipped cream, it becomes a crowd pleaser. The other recipe that you get from this mix is the exact tasting garlic cheese biscuits that you are served at Red Lobster. Both of these recipes are always requested from me by my guests.

In the country gift store area, you can purchase cast iron products, fresh honey, home made jams and jellies, old fashion candy. There are many pre mixes of variety of pancake and muffins, apple butter, and too many pantry items to list. They always have items you can sample. This is how I bought the "Grandma's Bisquick and Pancake Mix" because they had a sample of their chess pie.

When you are done browsing through the country store, you can go out on the porch and feed the fish in the river.

Nora Mill Granary seems to have new items all the time. So every time I visit Helen, Georgia, I always stop in to explore. Then I go across the street to Habersham Winery to tastes the wines. Now that makes a nice ending to a long day of shopping.

I love Georgia and I love pancakes, so this would be a double treat for me. Hey - triple treat cause I love wine, too! Thanks for the entertaining read.

Especially appreciate the info about new items and the winery nearby. If you have time, hope you'll check out my latest medical info on how common antacids and whole wheats may contribute to anemia. I always love seeing your articles, look for them daily.
