  • Geography. Covering over 600 acres, It is bordered by the St.John and Ocklawaha rivers. It's land area covers parts of Seminole, Lake, Putnam, and Marion Counties. It is about halfway between the cities of Gainesville and Orlando.

  • Things to see and do. Hundreds of ponds and lakes, plus slow moving rivers and wet prairies covered with water lilies, and ringed by cypress trees. Besides all other native Florida plants and animals, it has the largest population of Black Bears in the state. There is a 22 mile rough bicycle trail, a sturdy mountain bike is a must. Canoeing is big here, with at least 4 Canoe rental locations. There is primitive camping and developed camping sites that can be reserved. A state fishing licence must be purchased.

  • Getting there. Interstate 75 runs north to south near Ocala. The nearest airport is the city of Gainesville, home of the University of Florida, about 15 miles north, it is served by Delta Connection from Atlanta, and US Airways Express to Charlotte. Greyhound serves both Ocala and Gainesvil

  • Upon arriving, Getting a trail map at Visitor Station is a must. Sandy auto trails demand a 4X4. It's possible to get stuck miles from help. US highway 19 runs by the Black Bear Mall, where the Visitor Station is. The trailhead is a few miles away.
