Visit Oklahoma City on a Budget

Are you thinking about taking a trip with your family to Oklahoma City? Are you wondering what there is to do in Oklahoma City that doesn't cost an arm and a leg? Stockyards City

Oklahoma City has a heritage steeped in the old west so, you might want to take a drive through, or stroll through Stockyards City. This drive through or stroll will provide your family with a bird's eye view of an Old West city. Stockyards City first became a packing area early in the 1900s. Much of the original architecture and many of the original buildings are still in use and the City has the feel of a modern cowboy and cowgirl town.

Community Recreation Centers

Before visiting Oklahoma City, check out the website at the end of this section to find where Oklahoma City Recreational Centers are located and their hours of operation. There are 12 of these Centers in Oklahoma City offering free activities for children all year round. Some of the activities provided include: games, sports, arts and crafts, fitness, performing arts and more.

Oklahoma Railway Museum

A trip to the Oklahoma City Railway Museum is a great idea and it has free admission. You can ride a passenger train, visit a caboose and an authentic dining car, and even look into a Pullman car. This Museum has become well know for its Day out with Thomas the Train event.

If you want to be able to ride the trains, be sure to plan on being at the Museum on the first or third Saturdays of the month from April to August or the first Saturday in September or third Saturday in October.

Martin Park Nature Center

There is no doubt that a trip to the Martin Park Nature Center is a must do for families on a budget. The admission is free and the Center offers so many fun and educational things to do. This wildlife sanctuary is home to many birds, butterflies, squirrels, deer, coyotes, owls and armadillo, just to name a few. The Center hosts a hands-on museum and has a wonderful browsing library. There are miles of hiking trails. You can get guided tour for as little as $2.00.

Oklahoma City Firefighters Museum

Many children and adults are fascinated by fire trucks and engines so a visit to the Oklahoma City Firefighters Museum is right up their alley. This Museum features a collection of incredible antique fire gear and equipment dating all the back to the mid 1700s. It is exciting to actually see the first fire station that was erected in what was called the Oklahoma Territory way back in the olden days -1869. While touring the Museum, you will be able to look at the world's largest collection of fire department patches. There is also a fantastic mural called The Last Alarm. Although the Museum is not free, the admission fees are reasonable - adults/$5.00, Seniors (55+)/$4.00, Children (6-12)/$2.00 and under 6 free.
