Visit Sofia, Bulgaria: A Great City in a Great Country

Stefan Tenev
Bulgaria has turned to be one of the most exciting locations to visit in Europe. In the past 5-7 years the country has been undergoing some major changes. There are many places to visit in Bulgaria; however Sofia is the most interesting city to visit.

If you go to Bulgaria you will be probably landing in the capital Sofia. You will get a warm welcome on Airport Sofia, since it's brand new and it is one of the best in the region. Sofia has it's a very old city and there is tons of attractions to visit. There are national museums, art galleries, historical landmarks and etc. However for me being a 20 year old I will focus on the more fun attractions like the entertainment part called Sofia Land. If you are a shopper you will be enjoying the best mall in Eastern Europe called Sofia Mall. The mall is located in the center of the city and it is the biggest shopping mall in Bulgaria. Bulgarian people like to enjoy themselves and this is reflected in the types of stores in the mall. All of the stores are designer fashion stores which describe perfectly the Bulgarian youth: fashionable and beautiful. If you have the time you will be spending some time in the local coffee shops and chill out areas around downtown. The best hotel in Sofia is the Sheraton which is located in the middle of the city. However there are hotels like Hilton, Kempinsky and many more which are top quality hotels and you can get a room for no less than 140 Euro per night. One thing you have to have in mind that prices are pretty high considering that the country just joined the European Union and everything is switching to Euro currency.

One great thing in Sofia is that the city is so compact and small; you can go from one end to another in less than 30 minutes. My personal advice for you is to rent a car which is available at the airport. All major rent a car companies have offices there. City like Sofia never sleeps. Especially in the summer when the weather is warm people seem to go out all night long and party. The drinking age in Bulgaria is 18 however its not strictly applied. Places don't have a closing time, they work until there is customers, which is one of the sweetest things about Bulgaria and more specifically Sofia. There are many modern clubs and people seem to like all kinds of music. However the most liked music in Bulgaria is the Bulgarian Pop - Folk also known as "Chalga".

Soccer is another big thing in Bulgaria and Sofia being the capital the city lives with soccer. Sports are big and people enjoy playing them in one of the many parks in Sofia.

All in all Sofia is the purl of Eastern European cities and I think that it's a great location to visit. The Bulgarian people are warm and they will welcome you.
