Visit Southern Maine This Summer

The Beautiful Natural Resources and History Make Maine "Vacationland".

After spending an entire summer in the southern part of the state of Maine, I can truly see why they call the state "Vacationland". Travelers flock to the state during the summer when they want to escape the warmer weather down South. Though some folks want to be on a warm beach for the summer, there are places in Maine that can be just as entertaining. If you're looking for a different kind of summer experience, head to Maine for the summer.

The southern part of Maine, including the state's largest city of Portland, is the best place to visit if you're heading to Maine. Portland is not only the largest city in the state, but also the state's commerce center. It sits only a couple of hours from the huge city of Boston and many travelers make trips between the two cities. In Portland, there is the state's largest mall, known as the Mall of Maine. Though it's not the best shopping in the world, it's the best you'll find within a 100 mile radius.

Though the cities are nice, people head to Maine during the summer to experience nature. The temperature is perfect during the day. It hovers anywhere between 70 and 85, though some days can be hotter or colder than that. Maine is known for its beautiful lakes and the numerous trees. In many spots in the lower part of the state, it's as if the area hasn't been yet touched by the hand of commerce. Most travelers prefer going to the state for an extended stay. In that case, you'll want to grab a rental home on a lake somewhere. A good city for this is Bridgton or the neighboring city of Naples. Neither are large, but they provide a bit of private seclusion that makes for excellent vacation time.

While in Maine, you'll want to enjoy the great water sports. Rent a boat or jet ski and head out onto the pond or lake. The sun shines bright on these areas, but mixes with the colder air to create quite a phenomenon. If you're up for it, head down to Old Orchard Beach outside of Portland and get into some ocean kayaking. The cost is low and it's lots of fun for anyone who likes to be active.

Also in Portland is the historic area of Old Portland. There, you can enjoy delicious Maine lobster and look out over the old wharf. This city reminds many of Boston and has a northeastern feel that radiates.
