Visit to Vijay Fort at Valor in South India

The country of India is full of historical places. I was able to visit one such historical place of Valor that is situated in South India near the city of Chennai during my last visit to India during last winter. I have covered a brief review of my said visit to this historical town of Valor in this article.

The city of Valor is situated at the distance of around 90 miles from Chennai. The best option to reach Valor is to travel by hired car or taxi from the city of Chennai and stay at Velor for one day and return to Chennai by the next day evening. We started at around 7 am in the morning from our hotel at Chennai and reached Valor by around 10 am. We went to see the Vijay Fort of Valor after settling at the hotel. This historical fort is situated in the outskirts of Valor. This stone fort was made by the King of Vijaynagar, Sada Shivraj and the chief of King of Shreerangam, Sina Bomi Naik in the sixteenth century. This historical fort was won by Maratha rulers in the eighteenth century and was finally in the control of King Tipu Sultan before it was finally won by the Britishers. The King Tipu Sultan and his sons were kept in prison at this fort. This historical fort is having a unique circular design covering the entire city of Velor. It is around 40 feet high and is having 64 minars, which were used as the observation posts during the times of war.

The fort is full of ancient Hindu temples. The most famous temple out of all is the Lord Shiva temple of Jalkanteshwar. This Lord Shiva temple was also constructed in the sixteenth century along with the fort and is considered one of the most vital Lord Shiva temples, even today. The temple has many beautiful sculptures all around. The entire Shivapuran is engraved in stone at this temple. The Lord Shiva Lingam at this temple is also quiet big. The water falls continuously on the top of this Lingam all through the year. This temple is in charge of the archeological department of India and that is why this temple is protected quiet well. There are few other ancient temples inside the historical Vijay Fort. The ancient temple of Lord Hanuman is also worth visiting here. This ancient temple was built in sixteenth century and is having Lord Hanuman statue in a standing posture with Lord Ram, brother Laxman and Goddess Sita held in his hands.

There are few hotels available at Valor for the visitors to stay. Hotel Sangit, which is located just opposite to the bus depot, is a good hotel that offers three star facilities at the rates of around Rs.2500 ($55) per day for a nice double room excluding all meals. The traditional South Indian meals are available at many local restaurants of Valor. Such food items are quiet spicy and may not be suitable to all. It will be better to carry your own supply of mineral drinking water with you as the drinking water here is having dissolved salts in it and may not be hygienic. The best time to visit Valor is during the winter months from November to March. The stay of one night will be sufficient at Valor to pay the visit to all the sightseeing places.

If you are fond of seeing historical monuments and are history lover, Valor is certainly a place for you to visit. If any of my readers have any questions or doubts on this, they all are free to contact me.
