Get Off the Beaten Path in North Carolina

Tara Dodrill
Get off the beaten path and enjoy a beach with ample elbow-room. Wrightsville Beach in North Carolina offers just that, and a whole lot more. Step away from the honky-tonk style beaches, with cheesy t-shirt shops and bars crowded into every nook and cranny. Located just off of U.S. Highway 17, this slightly out of the way destination is a beacon to discerning travelers. The "Waterway Guide" recognizes Wrightsville Beach on the list of the "World's Most Beautiful Beaches."

Attractions

Quiet does not mean boring. Explore the primitive areas of barrier islands, take a dolphin spotting tour or enjoy live music and dinner while on a riverboat cruise.

If you encounter a rainy day, all is not lost. Take the kids and explore the Wrightsville Beach Museum. Admission is free and the kids will have so much fun they won't even realize they are learning while browsing the exhibits.

Feeling a bit adventurous? Spend a day or a week learning how to maneuver the waves at Surf Camp. Classes and day camps are offered for children, teens and adults. Feel like a pro after some times spent learning on the board through the Roxy and Quicksilver sponsored curriculum.

Tour the Battleship North Carolinq and see what life was like about a battle cruiser during World War II. The ship was the most decorated armored cruiser during WWII and boasts 15 battle stars. Touch a piece of history as you run your fingers across the bow and enter the living quarters once used by sailors.

In nearby Cape Fear, you can hop aboard the Henrietta III and embark upon a sightseeing cruise of the North Carolina coast. The guide narrated tours include dinner and dancing. Throughout the year, special event, holiday and sunset cruises offer additional entertainment and themed activities.
