Visiting Cedar Creek State Park in West Virginia

Cedar Creek State Park is located near the center of West Virginia just west of Interstate 79. Situated on almost 2500 acres of forested hills, Cedar Creek State Park offers many activities in a scenic setting. The park offers 3 fishing ponds (fishing is also available in Cedar Creek), a campground, a swimming pool, hiking, game courts, and many other activities.

Cedar Creek State Park's campground provides almost 40 campsites that offer electricity (at most sites), a picnic table and grill, and a parking area. The campground provides showers and restrooms at three comfort stations. A large group camp is also available in the park for large gatherings. Laundry facilities are also available. The park also provides a store with limited grocery items and camp supplies. Firewood and ice are also available at the campground check in station. The check in station is a restored log cabin moved from another location within Gilmer County.

Another site of historical interest in the park is a reconstructed one room school. The one room school is set up with student desks and other period items. The park offers tours of the one room store on Saturdays during the summer.

Cedar Creek State Park offers 14 miles of trails within the park ranging from gentle strolls to more challenging expeditions. Cedar Creek State Park is home to a variety of wildlife that can be spotted from the hiking trails. My son and I on a recent visit observed an albino deer browse through the woods with its better camouflaged buddies. Beavers are also commonly spotted in the ponds at the park.

One of the primary draws of Cedar Creek State Park are the three well stocked fishing ponds. This is a great place to bring the kids. The ponds situated one next to another with about a 5 foot dam between each. This allows kids to explore the ponds while mom and dad relax in one area and keep an eye of the kids. The ponds have limited structure to target but have enough fish to keep even accomplished fishermen entertained. The ponds are home to bluegill, largemouth bass, catfish, and are seasonally stocked with trout.

Cedar Creek State Park offers a variety of activities for all. In addition to the above the park hosts or is close to many seasonal events including the West Virginia State Folk Festival in Glenville.
