Visiting the Children's Museum of Indianapolis with a Toddler

Tips and Tricks

Emily Harmon
The Children's Museum of Indianapolis is the world's largest children's museum. Upon first entering The Children's Museum of Indianapolis this fact is quite apparent. While The Children's Museum of Indianapolis is wonderful for children (and adults) of all ages, taking a toddler to visit this unique venue posts some special challenges. Here are tips for visiting The Children's Museum of Indianapolis with a toddler.

Arrive Early. The crowds at The Children's Museum of Indianapolis can be really large and a little overwhelming, especially for a toddler. Take advantage of lower early morning crowds at The Children's Museum of Indianapolis and get there just before the museum opens. Not only will you face reduced crowds, your toddler is likely to be in his best mood of the day to enjoy all the wonders of The Children's Museum of Indianapolis.

Skip the Temporary Exhibits. The Children's Museum of Indianapolis often has temporary exhibits that boast artifacts and other amazing items from around the world. While seeing these temporary exhibits is incredibly interesting for older children and adults, your toddler will likely be bored by them. The Children's Museum of Indianapolis has so much to see without the temporary exhibits, you are better off skipping it if you have a toddler in tow. Save some money (since visiting temporary exhibits usually costs extra) and get the most out of the rest of the museum.

Plan Exhibit Visits According to Your Child's Interests. Check out The Children's Museum of Indianapolis's website before visiting so you can plan the order of your visit around your child's interests. Toddlers are likely to wear out before they get to see the entire The Children's Museum of Indianapolis. If you toddler loves trains you won't want to miss the All Aboard exhibit, just as if your toddler loves dinosaurs, Dinosphere should be one of the first exhibits visited.

Take a break. The Children's Museum of Indianapolis has a wonderful food court with reasonably priced food. Don't be shy about taking a break from all the fun to eat and rest. Taking a short break for lunch or a snack may reenergize, or relax, your toddler and leave him ready for more action, or a little calmer and ready to behave himself as you tour the rest of the museum.

Dress Appropriately. The Children's Museum of Indianapolis is full of interactive exhibits and even a preschool play area with water, sand, and plenty of climbing activities. Make sure your toddler is wearing supportive, comfortable shoes and comfortable, light clothing. She will undoubtedly want to participate in all the activities The Children's Museum of Indianapolis has to offer and this might mean getting a bit messy. Dressing your toddler daughter in her cutest dress might not be the best choice for this venue.

Visiting The Children's Museum of Indianapolis with a toddler can be an absolutely wonderful experience. Like no other age group, toddlers enjoy the wonder of new experiences and appreciate everything they are offered. Take full advantage of this by following these tips for visiting The Children's Museum of Indianapolis with a toddler.
