When booking a place to stay, focus on the city center (high and low-end hotels are available, as well as hostels). Many of the sights are just a walk away from Cathedral Square, which is home to the Anglican Christchurch Cathedral. Be sure to visit the Cathedral and admire the English-style stained glass windows and unique wooden ceiling.
A 10-minute walk away from the Cathedral are the expansive Botanic Gardens. Free of charge, the gardens require at least an hour of time or could consume a whole day. Little kids will enjoy the dedicated pool area and adults will love the serenity of the different areas of the garden. Begin at the beautiful "Peacock Fountain" and then walk toward the center of the gardens to bask in the beauty of thousands of immaculately-kept roses in a stunning circular garden. A nod to the city's British heritage, this garden is kept beautiful nearly year-round for all to enjoy.
Close to the Christchurch's Botanical Gardens is the Canterbury Museum, which is also free of charge. A spread of unique exhibits include local as well as world-wide points of interest including Antarctic, Maori and even a reconstruction of a 19th century Christchurch street.
If you happen to be visiting on the weekend, visit the market that is set up close to the Botanic Gardens. Local artisans sell their wares, from traditional Maori jewelry to soaps, wool items and lots of local and international foods.
A trip to Christchurch isn't complete without going punting down the Avon River. Authentically Eduardian, punting, or drifting down the river gondola-style, affords visitors the chance to see the city from the water.
Other sights that shouldn't be missed include the Bridge of Remembrance, the Floral Clock (in spring and summer), Victoria Square, and for a chance to see a Kiwi and native aquatic life, the Southern Encounter Aquarium.
