Visiting Corolla, NC

If you are thinking of visiting a beach along the North Carolina coast, why not consider a trip over to Corolla? Corolla is located near the Virginia Border in Currituck County and is one of the newest "hot spots" along the Carolina coast. Currituck is of Native American heritage and it means "Land of the goose", though it should be called the "Land of the wild horses".

Corolla is home to scores of wild feral horses that roam the oceanfront. You can often see them frolicking in the surf or making their way through parking lots. There is a Corolla Wild Horse Fund that serves to protect the herd. You can also find over 75 types of wild birds in this area.

Corolla saw a building surge in the 1980's as it attempted to keep up with the other coastal communities of North Carolina. You will find many great private homes for rent as well as quaint waterfront Inn's. You can even stay at the Hampton Inn & Suites in Corolla which is right on the beach. Traffic can be trying, especially during the peak summer months. Be sure to budget in enough travel time to get to and from the area.

While in Corolla you have a lot of choices for things to do. Take a Wild Horse Tour, a beach jeep adventure tour, tour the Currituck Lighthouse, walk through the Wild Horse Museum, or just have fun on the beach.

You will find plenty of places to eat in the Corolla area. You can find sports pubs, restaurants, bagel stores and quick marts. If you decide you rather cook yourself then you can shop at the local Food Lion or Harris Teeter grocery stores.

Corolla is the perfect getaway spot if you are looking for something away from the crowded shores of the Outer Banks or Wilmington area. Once you go you will be hooked and wonder why it took you so long to visit!
