A good place to begin is Hickory Hill Llama Farm, Averil Park, NY. The farm was started back in the last half of the 1980's when a couple who had spent lots of time and energy investigating and researching what it would be like to own and care for llamas first opened Hickory Hill. The llama farm at Hickory Hill is a busy place, according to their website, all year long. Llamas are bread on the farm and baby llamas are present for all to see and enjoy. The Hickory Hill Llama Farm is not a giant zoo. The total number of animals is not huge but the difference in what you see is something special. Visiting the Hickory Hill Llama Farm means getting a feel for what it means to live closely with gentle animals and to care for their needs. Hickory Hill does not charge admission for a chance to view and spend some time with their llamas. Instead the owners of Hickory Hill, Pat and Ray Smith, Todd Smith and Paul Hastings graciously extend an invitation to those interested to stop by. What a cool idea.
In Massachusetts you can find llamas at Pinetum Farm Llamas, Granby. This farm is managed by Dave and Karen Seiffert and Fred and Cindy Seiffert. As you tell from this collection of names, the farm is very much a family business, in fact 5 generations have kept Pinetum Farm Llamas operating The women spend some time weaving and knitting while the men handle the necessary farm maintenance. Pleasantly enough, the llamas that reside at Pinetum Farm are not the only animals present . The Seifferts also offer hospitality and a home to a variety of ducks, chickens, geese, goats, bunnies, cats and dogs. Quite a collection all told.
What is special about the Pinetum Farm is not just that it provides an opportunity to visit this animal rich farm but it uniquely provides a chance to hike, but wait there is more. What is special about Pinetum farm is that you will be hiking with a llama companion who will carry your gear and who will walk along with you for a one or two hour hike. You can bring a snack and stop along the way. This is a great place to bring kids who love animals. Every effort is made to make this visit with the llamas a truly child friendly experience.
It may strike you that Connecticut simply does not sound like llama country but plunked down in Lebanon Connecticut you will indeed find Me Llama Farm waiting for a visit. When you stop by this eastern Connecticut farm you will learn that in all nearly 50 llamas call Me Llama Farm home. The fiber that comes from the llamas is spun and then used to knit and crochet products for sale. But there is lots of other action on this farm as well. Llamas are involved in hiking, carrying packs and hauling small carts. Lots of times llamas are just there to have fun with their owners and visitors.
Margaret and Edward Bender have owned Me Llama Farm for some twenty years and they have put themselves fully into their farm. While the Bender's do run the farm to make a living and actively breed and sell llamas and llama related products there is no charge for visitors who are welcome to stop and enjoy this special farm and its residents.
