Visiting Greece for Spring Break

Brooke
Greece is a place to go for an affordable holiday, delicious food at reasonable prices, cheap sailing, sunshine, historic adventures, alluring beaches, local wine, enchanting villages, and small islands abundant with scenic surprises. Its charm is evident from the moment you fly over the Aegean Sea surrounding it. What better time to visit than during Spring Break? Don't sweat it if you don't know where to go. Most cruises will take you to all of Greece's most popular cities. From Mykonos to Athens, the routes are rich in mythology, summoning memories of the first Grecians and their tales of gods and goddesses.

If this is your first time visiting Greece, I advise you find a package of your liking that would fit your itinerary. I had to find out the hard way, not only was I lost, but I was wasting precious vacation time trying to find my way around! Travelive is one of my favorite companies to find vacation packages from. Their cruises cover hotel expenses, food, and private tours. The Aegean Escape for example includes 12 night spread out in Crete, Athens, Mykonos, and Santorini. Or the Classical Greece on a Mega Yacht package with 3 nights in Athens, and 7 on a mega yacht cruise. Each place though is unique in its own way.

For instance parts of Crete, like Agios are built on what people call the "bottomless lake" which actually isn't bottomless because it doesn't go all the way to the other side of the earth, and isn't at all a lake seeing as it's connected to the sea. Just because it isn't bottomless, doesn't mean that it's not deep though. During World War 2 the Germans were able to dump all their tanks into this "lake" and be unnoticed.

Crete itself could be a country of its own with its great diversity in culture, historical happenings, and archaeological sites. It's easy to see why many people adore Crete as much as they do. Its endless beaches, magnificent mountains and gorges, and captivating caves are difficult to resist.

On the other hand, Athens is home to numerous cultural fashion events, temples most divine, and above all, the 2004 Olympics. The new transportation system takes you through parks, antiques, and places rich in night life such as Plaka and Thissio. Athens also has the widest selection from foods around the world, of course including Greek. If you are still planning out this trip on your own, you're going to want to know some of the best restaurants, where the most interesting touristy activities are, and available hotels.

Restaurants are the easiest to choose from; there are so many and in my opinion, all Greek food is good. Some of the best restaurants are in Athens, so if you came to Greece for the food, Athens is the way to go. If you're into seafood like me, you'd love the Ithaki at 28 Apollonos Street, Vouliagmeni, Athens. Its outdoor terrace and ocean view make spring a perfect time to visit. I've also heard many great things about Spondi, a meditrerranean restaurant on 5 Pyrronos Street also in Athens. Its skillful chef, Herve Pronzato has taken Athens by storm with his attractive food presentation, not to mention the taste.

The resort of my choice would have to be the Aldemar Royal Mare Village & Thalasso located in Crete for its many facilities like the spa, beach, swimming pool, child care, fitness center, water sports, gourmet restaurant, business centre, tennis courts, room modem, disability friendly, meeting facilities, and concierge. I love that you can go as a family but make it romantic at the same time with the different areas and pools. Though there are many others such as the Hotel Cavo Tagoo in Mykonos and the Saint Nicolas Bay Resort Hotel & Villas again in Crete.

Having an idea of what tourist attractions you would like to visit before you go is advisable, especially if traveling with a family to entertain. I for one loved seeing the cave within Mount Ida and the Kastéli Kisámou, an archeological site, both in Crete. Amboise Gate, a botanical garden display is lovely and in Rhodes. In Athens, the Acropolis Museum was too one of my favorites as it contains one of the most valuable collections of Greek art in existence. At the moment, according to Homes World Wide, Greece is the number one place in the world to vacation, but only fairly recently did it become this popular.
