Visiting the Island of Malta

Pauline Abreu
Malta is a small island, and you can cruise around the whole island in one day. There is also a cheap bus service available with the longest trip taking 50 minutes. Hiring a car is probably a good idea too if you want to see more of the island at your leisure. If you want to travel to the sister islands of Gozo and Comino then there is a regular ferry service to these islands. The blue lagoon on Comino island is a particularly good area. Many tourists like to do snorkeling in the waters there.

This is an historical island. If you would like to find out more about the history of Malta I would suggest you take the guided tour, which can be booked from wherever you are staying. There are also some public drinking bars that also cater to guided tours, and are sometimes cheaper too.

If you're looking for good beaches you'll find the best of them for tourist in the Northern regions. Valletta, the island capital, and St Paul's Bay have good beaches with Golden Bay boasting the largest beach on the island. The Argotti and Saint Philip's Gardens are two interesting botanical gardens you may wish to visit. Malta has some of the most oldest temples in the world.

In the crafts village in Ta Qali you can witness the makings of various glass items by watching the glass blowing displays. Marsaxlokk is also worth visiting it is a small fishing village with open air markets. In Buggiba you can see some of the best sea views Malta has to offer. There are lots of hotels and other accommodations to chose from. It has a rocky beach, lots of restaurants, pubs, and a large cinema complex. Among the tourist attraction you would want to visit in Valletta there are cathedrals, palaces, opera houses, the harbor's, and the Old Royal Opera House. There are no beaches in Valetta, however you can enjoy the many events that take place here, such as: The International Fireworks festival on the 7th - 8th of may each year, also the carnival in February, and the Delicata Classic Wine Festival on the 6th - 8th of August. In Rabbit you will see the famous Catacombs, St Paul's Grotto, and the Roman Villa. Floriana is also in the South part of the island not far from Valletta. Some attractions include: The War Memorial, Triton's Fountain, The Mall Garden's, and The Statue of Dante. There is a rocky beach in Sliema. You can also partake in fishing, bingo, and go on a harbor cruise.

Some recommended restaurants:
Fruit De Mer, in Mellieha This restaurant specializes in fish and meat dishes. Serves Maltese and international food.
The Grape vine pub, in Buggiba Pizza and light snacks are offered at this pub. It plays blues and soft rock music, and has an open fire.
Strawberry Grove, in Buggiba Pasta, steak, pizza, and other foods and desserts. Open 7 days a week.
Antonio Staggers, in St Pauls Bay Fresh fish, Maltese dishes, and the local rabbit dish is a popular menu option.

There are a lot more places to visit in Malta, and a lot more things to do. Go for a visit, and find out for yourself how good this small island is to visit. The friendly locals, and quaint villages will be a joy to your sightseeing adventures.
