Visiting Local Car Shows in the Summer is One of My Favorite Things to Do!
Having Free Access to Any Local Car Show is a Really Neat Summer Activity
Why is a car show so much fun?
I just love seeing up close all those amazing machines, and I really enjoy visiting with the owners. Some of the smaller car shows around town are the same crew of owners each week, but it is still a nice reason to get out of the house and walk around while enjoying one of the cooler things we humans have ever come up with. I am a huge fan of everything Mopar and I tend to gravitate towards those cars more readily than others. I suppose it is my form of being prejudiced, but it is not out of any kind of meanness or anything like that, I just prefer the body styling and the engine sounds of an older Chrysler, Dodge, or Plymouth over most other models. I get more from listening to a running 1965 Coronet with a real Hemi engine in it than almost any other car on the planet.
So this last month our local fire and police departments had a car show in their facility and lot. There were food vendors and prizes for the cars and their owners. They had a 50/50 raffle and all proceeds went to their annual "Shop with a Cop" program. This was a first time event for them and they had over 150 cars with a strong public turnout as well. The most fun thing of the day was a burnout run in the lot across the street. The sound of the few cars that did burnouts was just tremendous!
Burnout Burnout Burnout!
I was not the only one who was clamoring for them to do more burnouts! The crowd at any auto show is usually a group of nice and like minded people who are all into cars and are just out to have a good time. I have only seen one or two angry people and it is usually a car owner who was being disrespected. Some people do not realize that their dangles and bangles can scratch the paint on one of these classic beauties! So it is wise to be very careful around these machine! Treat the cars and their owners with respect and you will never have a problem at any car show anywhere!
There were a lot of people there for the event, and I saw little people and older people there as well. Some of the nicest looking Mopars I have seen in quite a while were here. There was a really sweet !969 blue with white stripe 340 Cuda, and a very well done 1968 Dodge Charger, plus a 1965 Dodge Coronet with a custom built 572 cubic inch Hemi in it! Now I will tell you that jet black Coronet was absolutely awesome! The show winner was a beautiful red Willy's pickup with a huge blower sticking up out of the hood, and wheelie bars sticking out the back. This thing looked so good you felt warm just standing next to it. it was definitely the shiniest thing on the lot!
How would I have voted?
So after walking the many rows of cars and trucks a few times over I settled in and tried to pick the ones which I felt the judges might select. This is sort of a game that I play, just a thing that i do to see if my tastes are even close to what the judges are. I was right on three out of the six big prizes. I did not expect the Willy's to win first place, although it was a really nice looking truck. I felt that the Oldsmobile Vista Cruiser was a very cool and nostalgic piece and it won a prize as well. I also pegged the silver charger and it won. Then my last winner was the blue Cuda.
The fun thing about these smaller local shows is that everyone really is there just for the fun of it, and families are more than welcome. They are not all about entertaining just us motor-heads, but it is open to all types of people just the same. So when you are looking for an interesting time out of the house and it is a nice sunny day why not look for a fun local car show to go see? You may be surprised at how much nostalgia it can bring back to you as well!
